Why PR?

I’ve always had a knack for writing and an interest in how the media works. But upon graduating college, I wanted to test the waters of the business world and landed a great job in the buying department of a major retail company. I soon realized the only time I would get excited about my job was when I was working on the ads and communicating with the field. I then turned back to my journalism roots and joined the PR world, where I could combine my business and communication interests. I love the constant learning that naturally occurs with the job and being a part of the major issues of the day. It’s great to be able to open a paper or a magazine and see the results of our efforts in major news outlets across the country!
Areas of Expertise and Interest
I direct several of the firm’s professional services accounts, providing strategic counsel on media relations, social media and marketing activities. Since day one at the firm, I’ve worked in the human resource and management consulting space, and gained more knowledge about the insurance industry than most people would care to know. Social media has become a new focus for me in recent years, and I now regularly conduct training sessions for clients on social media basics, including LinkedIn, Twitter, Google Reader and blog writing/engagement sessions. I’ve led social media audits and have had the pleasure of helping clients launch blogs, web sites, and establish social media policies and programs. When BlissPR established its blog, it gave me an outlet for my own writing, outside of ghostwriting blogs for many of my clients. Inside company walls, I direct internal training programs for our employees and implement initiatives aimed at improving client service including an annual survey.
What I Did Before BlissPR
After graduating from Indiana University with a Journalism major and Business minor, I went to work as an assistant buyer for Famous-Barr (a division of what was formerly May Department Stores). It was an abrupt awakening to the real world, where I quickly realized that retailers work long days and holidays are for the customers. After deciding I needed to try a different career path, I got a taste for PR and Worldcom Public Relations Group at Standing Partnership in St. Louis. I then moved onto Adamson Advertising, a larger marketing communications agency in St. Louis, where I continued to focus on PR but gained a broader understanding of how different pieces of the marketing puzzle fit together. Next came the move to NY and I’ve been at BlissPR ever since—even after coming full circle back to St. Louis and the offices of Standing Partnership!
What I Do for Fun
I’m constantly thinking about new places to explore—whether it’s a destination in the United States or overseas, a new restaurant, a concert or simply a book. Otherwise, I enjoy spending time in the company of friends, family, my husband and my dog…wherever that may take me.
