Why PR?

Abby Gouverner Carr: Managing Director

No one in advertising would hire me. Not sure why…perhaps because I had featured on my resume a summer internship at a Folk Art Museum assisting the PR director (a volunteer) updating her mailing list. However, I have never looked back and have no regrets. This profession offers a gratifying combination of continuous learning, senior-level client contact and time with true thought leaders. It’s the perfect perch from which to observe (and participate in) the world of business.

Areas of Expertise and Interest

It’s a chicken and egg question: Do I like all of the areas we specialize in—finance, accounting, law, marketing, architecture—because I naturally like them, or because that’s what I have been working on for 25 years? I like learning new things and talking to intelligent people about what they do for a living—and what they think about what they do. I particularly enjoy working with clients in financial services—banking, investments, private equity, insurance—because it used to seem impenetrable to me and in fact, it’s not.

What I Did Before BlissPR

After I graduated from Brown University (1982, Phi Beta Kappa, Magna Cum Laude) I paid the rent by selling wallets at Mark Cross (a luxury goods store that used to be on Fifth and 53rd) and writing freelance for the promotions department of FORTUNE magazine. Then I met John Bliss, and he interviewed me over a game of PacMan (long story), and that was that.

What I Do for Fun

What do I most enjoy? Playing with my three kids, solving puzzles, making peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, singing hymns, planning birthday parties, reading about how the brain works, and visiting my kids’ 28 cousins. Also learning to cook Indian food, and talking to my husband after the kids are in bed. I believe James Taylor is right when he says, “the secret to life is enjoying the passage of time,” and I am slowly learning to do that.
